Day 4

9x12 oil on canvas  Two with Two

Today I picked up a canvas that had a quick sketch of two flowers in a vase that I had started back in 2011 and just never got back to it.  The image was there for inspiration but it just wasn't enough so I quickly set up a plate with a glass to help me a bit with the shapes and shadows.  Needless to say, I was quickly in ellipse hell and actually almost decided I needed to name this one "Ellipse Hell".   I still do not have them right but I'm moving on as I should and get ready for the next challenge day.

I can only say that doing a challenge like this serves an artist well in several ways.  First it forces work!  Second it forces speed!  And, third it forces acceptance for the good and the bad.  I like it and tomorrow I'll keep going.

  1. Hi Phyllis, I had to chuckle at your yesterday when I had a very similar experience trying to do a tea cup with flowers still life, Check it out..I decided to just go with the humor of it and move on. We are probably our own worse critics.

  2. LOL, I know. I do like doing this challenge but especially enjoy when the tension of it all is over each day. LOL I'll go check your tea cup out. I bet it's fine.

  3. You are right, Phyllis, about it all: the difficulty on an ellipse and all the great things about this challenge and what it does! Paint on, girl!

  4. Oh Phyllis! You do make me smile! I have had a day too! I put todays painting on the challenge page but not on my blog. :(
Ellipse are the devil! Carol marine never shows the whole thing, and that makes your brain connect the ellipse.

  7. Hi Phyllis! So good to see you here and to, well, paint the challenge along with you! I agree - it is a good practice. And it certainly forces discipline! Love your sense of humor! - Jim

    1. Jim... good to see you too. I did not know you were painting with the challenge. I'll have to go look. I remember well painting at Callaway with you. Sadly I haven't had much time to paint over there lately, but am painting more now. If you ever visit your brother in Columbus and want to come over to paint at Callaway just get in touch with me and we will connect. If I haven't already told you, congratulations on your marriage and new studio!
